Deceased were riding triple seat on motorcycle when car ferrying call centre employees rammed into their bike on Dumping Road; bike rider escapes with bruised hands, legs
Adding to the growing number of fatal accidents in the city, two persons died in a road mishap in Mulund at 5.30 am yesterday. The deceased were identified as Rakesh Verma (21) and Akash Gaikwad (23). While Verma died on the spot, doctors of the nearby M K Agarwal Hospital declared Gaikwad dead on arrival.
Police officials said the accident occurred after a vehicle ferrying call centre employees dashed into the motorcycle on which three people were travelling, including the deceased. While the car was on its way to Mulund Checknaka, the bikers had left their respective residences on Tuesday evening and appeared to be heading home.

Akash’s brother Paresh Gaikwad said, “He told us that he’s going to meet his friend and will not return home at night. Never in our dreams had we thought that such an incident would occur.” Police Sub-inspector Dilip Mane of the Mulund police station said, “The victims were travelling triple seat. While the duo sitting pillion died, the rider escaped with minor bruises to his hands and legs. The accident took place on the Dumping Road in Mulund and is the area where the trio resides.” He added that car driver Shamkat Ahre (41) was arrested on the spot soon after the accident.
Replying to the question whether the accused was driving under the influence of alcohol, Mane said, “As per preliminary reports, we concluded that the accused wasn’t drunk but the speed of the car wasn’t in his control. The incident occurred after the accused overtook a vehicle on the Dumping Road. He didn’t notice the victims’ bike while turning left and rammed it from behind.”
Ahre was been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public), 304 (A) (causing death by negligence) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety) of the Indian Penal Code and will be produced in Mulund court today. u00a0
