Wayamba United’s biggest threat was Jacob Oram, who they failed to overcome. The Uva Next all-rounder proved too hot to handle for Mahela Jayawardene’s men as they slumped to their worst defeat (20 runs) in the Sri Lanka Premier League semi-final at the R Premadasa Stadium here yesterday.
Oram impressed all with a pulsating 41 off 17 balls to post a fighting total of 171 for six in the 20 overs. He then grabbed three wickets for 16 in his four overs to set up the title clash with the winner of Kandurata Warriors vs Nagenahira match. Wayamba United, managing to score 151-8, never looked to be in a challenging position. Man of the match of the last match, Dinesh Chandimal (5) departed early. All hopes crashed after skipper Jayawardene (1) was out leg before to Oram. Tamim Iqbal provided some fireworks, but got carried away in the momentum and threw away his wicket. Azhar Mahmood (75 not out) and Isuru Udana (42) provided some late spark, putting on a valiant 120 for the eighth wicket, which was not enough.
