Geneva: An Asian man has paid a record $31.6 million (R210 crore approximately) for an extremely rare 15.38 carat pear-shaped pink diamond auctioned at Sotheby’s, making it the most expensive fancy vivid pink diamond ever to go under the hammer.

The rare gem called the ‘Unique Pink’ is set in a simple ring and was bought yesterday by an Asian private buyer, who bid for it over the telephone and whose identity has not been disclosed.
“The Unique Pink set a new world record for a fancy vivid pink diamond... It’s the highest price ever paid for a fancy vivid pink diamond,” said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s international jewellery division. Yesterday’s sale eclipsed the previous record of $28.5 million.
