UoP may lose its road to DP
Supplementary suggestion in the new Development Plan (DP) seeks restructuring of varsity's private road into a public one; UoP officials have time till June to raise objection
It has been revealed that the University of Pune (UoP) stands to lose its private road — between UoP main gate and road going from IUCAA premises to Khadki — if the approved supplementary suggestion in the new Development Plan (DP) of the PMC goes unchallenged by varsity officials till first week of June.
In the original DP, it was suggested that the 24-meter road adjacent to the UoP campus, which passes from the nearby Vaikunth Mehta Institute (VMI), be developed till Khadki Botanical Garden. But while approving the DP during a General Body meeting on January 7, the road to be developed was replaced with the one in the UoP campus after corporator Deepak Mankar filed a supplementary suggestions claiming that the road passing through VMI was on defence land and hence it was difficult to develop it.
Ujwal Keskar of the Pune Bachao Samiti said, “It is illogical to convert UoP’s private road into a city road. The varsity administration should immediately file an objection on the DP to dismiss this supplementary suggestion.”
When contacted, UoP Executive Engineer R V Patil said, “How can varsity give away a road that passes through its campus. We don’t have problem if the PMC wants to develop the adjacent 24-meter road going from VMI.” Despite repeated attempts Mankar remained unavailable for comment.
While approving the DP during the General Body meeting held on January 7, members of the house had included about 400 supplementary suggestions. The Pune Bachao Samiti came up with 22 suggestions that were either contradictory or involved vested interest by the corporators.
