A criminal investigation and an internal probe has already been initiated by the Marines, but they have refused to reveal the names of the Marines involved, The BBC reports.
"We cannot release the name of the unit at this time since the incident is being investigated," informed Lt. Col Joseph Plenzler, US Marines spokesman.
American media had earlier reported that the errant soldiers belonged to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment that has been positioned for various combat and peacekeeping situations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, and even for fighting wildfires in Idaho.
This particular unit was deployed in Afghanistan at the start of 2011and returned home in September or October. The unit is said to be based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, which is a major American military base. The You Tube video has invited wide-scale denunciation.
