Vaibhavi gets a move on

Vaibhavi Merchant's biggest fear is that the love of her life will turn out to be an atrocious dancer. But till she finds her future husband to dance with, this lady is happy to match steps with Hrithik Roshan, her co-judge on the upcoming dance reality show, Just Dance. The choreographer talks to CS about her first love, dance:

Who: Vaibhavi Merchant
What: Talks about her love for dance
Where: At the Just Dance press conference

Step by step
Since I come from a family of choreographers (my grandfather was Shri B Hiralal and Chinni Prakash was my mom's first cousin), no one was too surprised when I decided to earn my bread and butter from dance. But for a long time I wanted to be a fashion designer. Then when I applied to Sophia Polytechnic for a fashion course, they sent me back saying that I was overqualified since I'd scored 89 per cent. So I went to my uncle and asked him if I could assist him on a film as a choreographer. And I was such an idiot at that time, that when a production guy came to me with my pay cheque, I told him that I didn't want the money, I was there for the love of dance. I don't mind the money now, but I'm still here for the love of dance.

Just move it
While I idolise many international artists like Gene Kelly, Madonna, Michael and Janet Jackson, and Ginger Rogers to name a few, I think that our Indian actors are pretty good too. Hrithik is fantastic, as is Shah Rukh. Hrithik can pull off any step in the world, while SRK knows how to get a bit of the film character into the dance. I remember, when we were filming for Hole Hole (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), we wanted SRK's moves to be perfect, but since he wanted his character Suri to shine through, he tweaked the steps. That's what makes Shah Rukh, the actor and dancer that he is.

The number game
I love dancing to the 80s numbers, because that's the music that I grew up on. I'm a big fan of the Laxmikant Pyarelal and R D Burman songs. Play me the Namak Halal numbers and I'm sure to start dancing. I'm not so much into the contemporary hits, because I've worked on many of them and know the real stories behind them. There's a different thrill altogether of grooving to the golden oldies. That was undiluted musicu00a0-- no item numbers and all. And though I love the idea of item numbers, it's the rehashes that I have a problem with. I loved Munni and Sheila and Main To Ainvayi Ainvayi, but these were songs that suited the script and the characters in the film. Doing an item number just for the sake of it isn't something that I endorse. But unfortunately, I don't drive the market.
