The University of Pune has accepted demands made by protesting PhD students and declared that they will be paid Rs 6,000 per month for two years in accordance with guidelines of the PhD stipend rules amended in 2009
More than 80 university PhD students had launched an agitation as they had not received their stipend from the time of registration since 2010 though the UGC had amended PhD stipend rules in 2009.
According to the declaration now, PhD students from each department will receive Rs 6,000 per month for two years starting from January 2012.

“They have agreed to pay us the stipend of Rs 6,000 for two years. Now the candidates who will seek admission for the next academic session starting from June 2012 and those entitled for the stipend of Rs 18,000 will have to give 75 per cent attendance and their names will be listed in the register everyday,” said Vinod Suryavanshi, a PhD candidate from the English department.
“We have issued a circular stating that the stipend for this year and the previous year will be given to candidates shortly. But they will have to follow certain rules which will be laid down for them,” University of Pune Vice-Chancellor Sanjay Chahande said.u00a0
