Top seed Varun Dave of Jamnabai Narsee (Juhu) breezed past Aditya Desai of Utpal Sanghvi (Juhu) to enter the final of the boys’ U-12 Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) inter-school badminton tournament at the CCI courts yesterday. The 10-year-old hardly faced any pressure in the match and went on to win 21-6, 21-8.
In the final today, Varun will take on Vidyan Bade of Utpal Sanghvi, who conquered Vikyath Bangera of Yashodham High School (Goregaon) 21-15, 22-20 in the other semi-final.
Varun, who started playing the sport when he was barely four, credited his grandparents for introducing him to the sport. “I started taking up sports seriously with an aim to have as many trophies and certificates as my grandparents, Hashmukh Joshi and Nandini Joshi. They are former state-level athletes in cricket and hockey in Gujarat,” said the Class V student who trains at the Uday Pawar Academy.
Maharashtra No 1 Varun added that he wants to emulate his idol World No 1 Lee Chong Wei. “I want to be as successful as him (Chong Wei). I didn’t miss a single match he played in the recently concluded Indian Badminton League (IBL). I want to be professional badminton player,” he said.
Meanwhile, it was a day of upsets in the girls’ category as two second seeds — Cherish D’Souza (U-16) and Samidnya Machindar (U-12) — crashed out. Third seed Kareena Madan of St Anne’s High School came from a game down to beat Cherish 15-21, 21-19, 21-18 while Chaitra Shetty of Arya Vidya Mandir upset Rajhans Vidyalaya’s Samidnya 15-21, 21-14, 21-11.
