The Movies I Loved Growing Up
The director picks his five flicks...

Guide: It's easily the most prolific film ever made in that era. The film was made on a grand scale, superb music, great storytelling and was very detailed. I remember watching it first on Doordarshan when I think I was about 10 years old. I'll always remember it as a love story with grey shades

Teesri Manzil: Watched this one on VHS when I was 12, I think. Another great flick by Vijay Anand (Anand directed Guide as well). I think he was easily the most underrated filmmakers our industry was produced.

Teesri Manzilu00a0 had the best combinations for a successful film of that time: a rivetting whodunit and unbelievable music and background score. It was a fantastic love story that had a great tempo going for it. It's a film I love watching even today.

Pinjra: What an outstanding film this was! I really loved the reflection of society that it presented us with. It was a very bold film.

Consider this: A school teacher falls in love with a lavani dancer.Superb film, superb music. Outstanding direction by V Shantaram. This is one of the films that revolutionised cinema. And the climax... it is to die for! Caught this one on Doordarshan.

Do Bigha Zameen: This Bimal Roy film is a classic. A fantastic depiction of human struggle, a strong father-son relationship and of society. Balraj Sahni's struggle reflects the class struggle of the time. The most famous sequence is of Sahni pulling a rickshaw, a scene that stays with you forever. The kid, I think his name was Rattan Kumar, was also very good in the film.

Naya Daur/ Gunga Jumna: Most actors claim to have been inspired by these films. It was in Gunga Jumna, for the first time that the Avadhi dialect was used in a mainstream Hindi film. Dilipsaab was told it wouldn't work. He persisted.

These two films see Dilip Kumar at his best. While Naya Daur is an unbelievable story that had true grit, romance and that tonga race, Gunga Jumna saw a conflict between two brothers. Both films had outstanding music.
