When you hear sirens and electric guitar lines in the same track, you know that the music is coated with stories on pent-up emotions against backdrop of social issues and emergencies. Parvaaz, the Rock group from Bengaluru, cemented their spot in a genre that is an alliance between Psychedelic Rock and poetry. They borrow from Urdu poetry and are often heard singing in Kashmiri. The band will play an original set at a gig tomorrow.

Two members of the group, Khalid Ahamed (vocals and guitar) and Mir Kashif Iqbal (guitar), grew up in Kashmir. “We studied in the same school and met again in Bengaluru at college. That’s when we decided to jam,” says Iqbal.

The sound of the band is dark with murky undertones. “The stories and themes keep changing. There is so much happening around. But our mutual love for music inspired us to write songs. They are mostly based on emotions,” he adds.

When in doubt while composing, a trip to Kashmir quickly solves inner dilemmas. “Kashmir is quite serene, and the band makes regular visits. It inspires us to indulge in art,” reasons Iqbal, who was a singer before taking up the guitar. He speaks a language of hope when he says music can play a vital role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. “Music transcends boundaries. We hope it feeds the mind, body and soul on both sides of the border.”

At the gig, they will perform songs from their EP Behosh and Baran, their full-length debut album that released in 2014. Don’t miss out on tracks like Beparwah, Gul Gulshan and Fitnah. Talking about their poetic influences, Iqbal shares, “We follow the work of Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Muhammad Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib and Mahjoor.”

The band is currently working on their second studio album and will release two singles for fans next month. “The mix of East and West makes us different. Our fans like our sound and lyrics.”
