The total voting percentage of the third gender was 59.15 as compared to 53.50 of men and women combined in city
In Mumbai, which has a total 23.80 lakh voters in the two constituencies of South Mumbai and South Central Mumbai, the voting percentage of the third gender surpassed the regular voters category. The total voting percentage of male and female combined in Mumbai comprising of 10 assembly constituencies was 53.50 per cent, whereas the voting percentage of the third gender was 59.15. There were a total of 71 voters belonging to the others category and 42 of them voted. Whereas there were 13.26 lakh male voters, but only 7.13 lakh voted, and of the 10.59 lakh female voters only 5.65 lakh voted.

This was the first time that the third gender voted with their identity. Earlier most of them used to vote as a male or a female. However, in the suburbs the response was not that encouraging. Of the 118 transgenders who had registered as voters, only 46 voted, thus bringing the percentage in the suburbs of Mumbai to a mere 39 per cent, as compared to the 51 per cent of votes by the male and female voters.
Highest voters by the third gender was in the Mumbai North-East constituency, which had 87 voters. Here, a total of 45 transgenders voted, highest in any of the six parliamentary constituencies in Mumbai.
The second highest voting by the transgenders was in the Mumbai South Central constituency, where a total 34 voters of the total 56 voted. In an earlier interview to this paper, many transgenders had said that, not many in the community could go out for voting because they weren’t registered as voters. All this because registration requires a lot of paper work and the documents needed weren’t available.
