It has been learnt that the Phase I of the monorail project between Wadala and Chembur will not be operational until June 2013.

Sources in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said several issues, including slow pace of work, have delayed the project and forced the MMRDA to extend the January 2013 deadline by four to five months.

“Due to various issues, including Right of Way (ROW) for carrying out work on monorail stations between Wadala-Chembur, we will have to push the project deadline of Phase I from January to either May or June,” an MMRDA official said.

After visiting the monorail construction site on the Eastern Freeway in June, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the Phase I would be operational by January 2013.

“Even though the line will be operational between May and June 2013, we will conduct commercial trial runs only by November,” a senior MMRDA official said.
