While a lot has been written about Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan's rivalry, we highlight those little friendly gestures that the two stars have made for each other over the years

Walk down memory lane: Shah Rukh Khan-Salman Khan's camaraderie

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan

That there are no permanent friends or enemies in Bollywood has been proven time and again. The relationship between the two reigning Khans, Shah Rukh and Salman, is a classic example. They became friends in their early days, and even when stardom knocked on their doors and the who-is-the-bigger-Khan game began, they did not let it affect their equation. They supported each other's films and promoted them too. However, when things soured between the duo in 2008 (they apparently had a major fight at Katrina Kaif's birthday bash), it was probably a chaotic phase in B-Town.

Having said that, it can't be denied that whenever they have shared cordial relations, SRK and Salman have gone out of their way to show that they will always be there for each other. When the hearing of Salman's 2002 hit-and-run case was on, SRK made a late night visit to his Galaxy Apartments to comfort him. Recently, when Shah Rukh turned 50, Salman went to Mannat to wish him.

But what they did recently was, perhaps, the height of their off-on friendship — the two stars posted Dubsmash videos on Sunday night in which they are seen dancing to the songs of each other's movies, which has now gone viral. SRK along with his 'Dilwale' co-stars Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon grooved to Salman's upcoming film 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's title track. On his part, Salman along with Sonam Kapoor danced to 'Tujhe dekha toh yeh jaana sanam' from Shah Rukh's 1995 blockbuster 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' (Watch Video)

We walk down memory lane and give you a lowdown on everything that they have done for each other since they first became friends:

Double hero
It is said that when Salman achieved stardom, Shah Rukh was still struggling to find a foothold in the industry. SRK apparently used to see him as a senior and was a regular at the Khan-daan's events. And then they came together for 'Karan Arjun' (1995) for which they received tremendous adulation.

Fleeting glimpses
They treated each other like brothers, but did not do any film together as lead heroes post that; they did only cameos in each other's films. Salman played an extended cameo for Shah Rukh in Karan Johar's 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' (1998). People praised their camaraderie on-screen. Of course, SRK returned the favour when he made a special appearance in Salman's 'Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega' (2000), which featured Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta alongside him.

Award sharing
In 1998, when Shah Rukh won the Best Actor trophy at an awards function for his performance in 'Dil Toh Pagal Hai', he went on stage and thanked Salman in his acceptance speech. He said, "I would like to dedicate this award to Salman, jisko lagta hai ki saare awards sirf mujhko milte hain". King Khan invited the 'Dabangg' star on stage, who sportingly came and walked away with the award after thanking everyone.

Freaky Fridays
In 2007, SRK's 'Om Shanti Om' clashed with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya' at the box office. Salman, who did an extended cameo in the Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor maiden outing, also made an appearance in the Farah Khan film, grooving to the title track.

Socially friendly
When they had a fallout in 2008, it was like the end of an era. B-Town was sort of divided into two camps; very few managed to remain friends with both stars. However, their cold war came to an end at politician Baba Siddiqui's iftaar party in 2013, when the actors hugged it out and buried the hatchet. Post that, they have been expressing their 'love' for each other on social networking sites.

Salman went out of his way to promote 'Happy New Year'on 'Bigg Boss', a reality show that he hosts while SRK tweeted the first look of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' on Twitter earlier this year. This had everyone speaking about the actors' reconciliation. Salman thanked Shah Rukh, and in turn, promoted the first promo of 'Raees'. The two actors exchanged words on the social networking sites like long lost friends. Earlier, Salman had even asked his fans to end their social media war with SRK's fans.

Wedding call
Last year, Salman invited SRK for his sister Arpita's wedding. While there was much 'will he, won't he' speculation, Shah Rukh silenced gossip mongers by not only turning up for the mehndi ceremony, but also chatting the night away with his friend-turned-foe-turned-friend.
