Pelt stone at fashion institute after models wear outfits inspired by the community; SOFT authorities apologise

Warkari-inspired fashion proved costly for the School of Fashion Technology (SOFT), Karve Nagar. Yesterday, Warkaris pelted stones at the fashion institute after the learnt of a fashion show being held in its premises wherein the models wore dresses "inadvertently" inspired by the attire they wear.

SOFT authorities apologised to the community in writing for "degenerating and misrepresenting Indian heritage and hurting religious sentiment".

They also called Warkari strongman Bandatatya Karadkar and "expressed regrets" over the incident.

"We have expressed our regrets for inadvertently allowing young girls to run a fashion show with an item inspired by the Warkari outfit," said Anil Kulkarni, vice chairman of Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha, which runs SOFT.

"We had no intentions of hurting anyone's sentiments and if anyone is hurt we are extremely sorry," he added quoting his talk with Karadkar.

Karadkar is currently in Kolhapur and could not be contacted. However, his counterpart Bapu Sahib More Dehukar confirmed receiving a letter of apology from the institute. "Now, we do not have anything against the institute as they have tendered an apology," he said.

He added that Pune is the "shaan" of Maharashtra and the city should refrain from degrading the "great Indian culture" in this manner.

Police were deployed at the institute yesterday after the incident.
