Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has tweeted that he would love to lead his country but feels Steven Gerrard is the perfect choice for the vacant captaincy spot.

Rooney took to twitter to respond to fans asking if he would like to replace axed England captain John Terry as the Three Lions captain.

"For everyone asking I would love to be England captain. But that's up to (the) new manager to decide. Gerrard is (the) perfect choice for me," he tweeted.

He has scored 28 goals in his 73 internationals and has been sent off twice, The Sun reports.

Rooney carried on with his excellent form this season with a brace yesterday, as title-chasing United beat Kenny Dalglish's men 2-1, who were led by midfielder Gerrard on Saturday.
