The 15-member squad picked by the selection committee comprising Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani, Surendra Bhave and Raja Venkat at the Cricket Centre yesterday was perhaps the best the five wise men could do, felt former India captain and chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar

“I won’t go into whether the selectors have made right choices or wrong, but would surely say that it was on expected lines. We have to admit that we don’t have enough quality players waiting in the wings,” Vengsarkar told MiD Day yesterday.

Quality needed
The former captain had no hesitation is saying that India desperately need more quality players to push the current lot. “It’s unfortunate, but true that we don’t enough resources to marshall. The selectors’ decision not to experiment is perhaps because of this. Besides the top players, we don’t have so-called new faces who have done consistently well over the past few seasons to make a case,” Vengsarkar said. Vengsarkar praised Srikkanth & Co for their ‘impartial’ choices. “If you see the team, everyone is on merit, so there is no question of regional bias while selecting the squad to tour Sri Lanka,” the former India captain said.

Lauding the selection panel for giving Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane the much-needed break, Vengsarkar said: “He has been in good form and so this is the right time to bring him in,” he said.

On whether selectors could have given importance to Vijay Hazare Trophy (one-dayers) where players like Robin Uthappa, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Akshay Darekar did well, the former selector said: “I am not sure whether they discussed the Vijay Hazare Trophy performance in the meeting, but the point is, most of the top players skipped the zonal one-dayers.” u00a0
