Get ready for Oscar night with this special screening

The most coveted awards in the world of cinema are still over 10 days away, but you get the chance to catch a curtain raiser of a short film nominee for 2017 before its fate is decided. This, apart from screenings of Stutterer, the 2016 Oscar short film winner; Henry, a 2013 Oscar nominee and Death Of A Shadow, another nominee from the same year.

Shamiana -- The Short Film Club has been screening curated shorts for almost a decade. And as the Oscar Short Films Night enters its fourth year, club founder Cyrus Dastur is a happy man. “The short film was an entirely new concept for the city when we introduced it. Over the years, people have come to love the format.” This edition also marks the film club’s collaboration with Ministry of New, where the acclaimed shorts will be screened tonight.

However, with no dearth of online content that can be viewed in the comfort of one’s home, getting people to step out and attend a screening is no mean feat. “The curatorial process is of paramount importance to ensure that it’s all worth the viewer’s time. It isn’t about throwing in a bunch of films together,” says Dastur. An Oscar nomination or even an award may not guarantee that a film will resonate with viewers. “The subject of the film and its treatment must agree with the sensibilities of the audience, and the plot has to be engaging,” he adds. “That we live in highly sensitive times, where offence is taken at the drop of a hat, further adds to the challenges of the curatorial process,” he reminds.

Jane Birkin in La Femme Et Le TGV

The films to be screened tonight are a diverse mix. The teaser is of the 2017 nominee, La Femme Et Le TGV, a Swiss short about a lonely woman, who develops a bond with a train driver. While Stutterer (UK) is the story of a young man with a stammer, Henry (Canada) is about a great concert pianist whose world no longer remains the same after the love of his life disappears mysteriously. The intriguing story of a soldier, who dies in World War I only to get a second chance at life, forms the plot of Death Of A Shadow (Belgium).
