Embassy says members of Marcel Koprivic's family have requested that he be cremated in India, explaining that he would have wished so
Almost 10 days after his death, Marcel Koprivic’s body remains unclaimed at the JJ hospital. Neither the Embassy of Croatia nor his relatives have approached the hospital yet to claim his body. The embassy officials have said that the family of the deceased has expressed the wish that Marcel be cremated in India.

The 56-year-old Croatian national was brought to JJ Hospital on February 5 after he was found near train tracks in Roha with a severed leg. Koprivic was undergoing treatment at the hospital. His condition deteriorated last week and he was shifted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU).
Fifteen days after he was admitted to JJ Hospital, he breathed his last on February 20. Doctors at the hospital claimed that his condition was critical right from the day of his admission to the hospital. According to the hospital authorities, the embassy had sent a formal request for a post- mortem of Koprivic’s body. The autopsy was conducted on February 22, which revealed that the cause of death was septicemia.
In response to MiD DAY’s query, a letter from the embassy revealed, “The family of late Marcel Koprivic has been contacted and informed that he has succumbed to his injuries. They wish that his body be cremated in India and the remains to stay in India, as it would be his last wish as well.”
None of Koprivic’s family members visited him during his 15-day-long hospital stay here. Koprivic had revealed that he arrived in India back in 1995, and had stayed on in Goa. The embassy refused to furnish any details about his arrival in India or why his family in Croatia had never contacted him or the embassy about his whereabouts.
Dr T P Lahane, dean, JJ Group of Hospitals, said, “If the embassy gives permission for cremation, we would hand over the body to the police and they would finish the formalities. In that case, the body would be labelled as ‘unclaimed’ and then cremated at an undisclosed location.” Jai Bhai, a constable with Roha police station, said, “No letter has been received from the embassy. Once it arrives, the last rites will be conducted in Mumbai.”u00a0
