What a crowd at Kurla!

Central Railway (CR) commuters who were stranded after the 31-hour suspension of services rail services that began at 10.35 am yesterday used the Harbour line to reach home. Services were suspended following the collapse of an MIDC water pipe bridge over a Kalyan-bound train near Thane station.

Srinivas Mudgerikar, CPRO of the CR said yesterday that commuters made their way to Kurla station to take Vashi-bound trains, where connecting trains to Thane awaited them. "We increased the number of trains from Kurla to Thane and Vashi yesterday. While the waiting time betweentwo trains is about 15 minutes on a regular day, yesterday we ensured there was a train every 5 to 10 minutes," Mudgerikar added.

Commuters had a harrowing time adjusting to the added crowds. Shama Yadav (19), who travelled from CST to Vashi, said, "I have never seen so many people at Kurla railway station. The crowds were as heavy at Vashi. I was surprised to see the length of the queue for buses to Kalyan at the Vashi bus depot."

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport increased the number of buses to Kalyan from Vashi. The waiting time for buses from Vashi to Kalyan was cut from the usual 20 minutes to 10 minutes.
"We arranged 10 extra buses for Kalyan and five extra buses for Dombivli," said an official at the Vashi bus depot.

CR public relations officeru00a0 A K Singh said that all tracks on CR will open by 6 pm today.

Long cut: Instead of travelling directly from Kalyan to CST in 80 minutes, commuters had to take the Thane-Vashi route that takes 105 minutes due to disruption of rail services after a water pipe collapsed on a train near Thane station yesterday
