They are once again creating noise with their music. And this time it's for an item number -- Anarkali Disco Chali, that's already the talk of town. The brief given to Sajid-Wajid was to make it bigger and better than Munni. The duo talks to CS about the popularity of item numbers and who, given an opportunity, they'd like to direct in an item song:
What: Chat about item songs and whom they would like to cast in
Where: At their studio
Sajid: Every director or producer wants a hit song. And we honestly work hard towards achieving it. But matching up to Munni is impossible. Not because it is a rage, but because Munni has been derived from a 100-year-old folk song. Hence it's popularity is unmatchable.
Wajid: We live in an audio-visual world. Here one has to learn to strike a balance between A-class visuals along with genuine lyrics. However, I like the old item songs over the new ones. Nowadays, there is too much emphasis on the skimpy clothes that the actress wears, instead of the song and its composition.
Sajid: Item numbers have always been a part of Hindi cinema. Even the black-and-white era had item numbers like Bholi Surat Dil Ke Khote, which are still selling even when people have forgotten about the film or the actor in the song.
Wajid: The recent rage of item songs started from the time remixes came into the market. Only the concept and visualisation of these item songs have changed from time to time according to the taste of the audience. The old item songs were more acting oriented. The songs were good quality and had high recall-value. They were subtle, but still had a strong impact. Today's songs on the contrary are very loud and crowded.
Shake it saiyyan
Sajid: If I ever direct an item number, my first and obvious choice will be Salman Bhai (Khan). Just his presence and smile is more than enough to make my song a hit. Apart from him, I would really like to do a song with Shahid Kapoor as he is a fantastic dancer and one with Ajay Devgn because he is completely raw when it comes to item numbers.
Wajid: My item song will be a tapoori song with full on masti. And needless to say, it will feature Bhai (Salman Khan). Other than him, there's only one actor who can do justice to item numbers -- Ranbir Kapoor. He is one guy in the industry who is versatile and can get away with any mischief without making it look vulgar.
