"I don't think I could go through that again. You're so close, I feel like I'm auditioning. You look so far away on the telly," Adele said.

However, the singer said that she loved every second of performing.

"That was so amazing! I've been waiting for half my life to do that. Thanks for having me. I nearly burst out laughing the whole way through."

Adele wasn't the only star to perform on the final day, with One Direction making what is believed to be their final TV appearance before their upcoming hiatus, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

One Direction members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson - performed their latest single "Infinity" as they returned to where it all began for them before Simon Cowell, who put them together as a boyband on the show, shared some words.

"This takes me back five years ago when I met five guys as solo artists. I know you are taking a break, you deserve a break and I just want to say thank you...I'm proud of who you have become. You have been an absolute pleasure to work with," Cowell said.

Host and singer Olly Murs then introduced a video featuring famous faces including David Beckham, Danny DeVito, Little Mix and Wayne Rooney, who paid tribute to the group.

British rock band Coldplay also took to the stage to perform "Adventure of a lifetime".
