Though woman was seated in the middle of an autorickshaw, bike borne thieves reached in and snatched her chain worth Rs 1 lakh; meanwhile, stolen jewellery was returned to victims of similar cases at Kherwadi police station
Victims of jewellery theft and chain-snatching received a Diwali surprise yesterday, when the recovered valuables were returned to them by senior police officers including the controversial ACP Vasant Dhoble.

However, at the same time, a woman fell victim to another incident of chain snatching in Vile Parle, which, interestingly, falls within ACP Dhoble’s jurisdiction. The case is registered at Vile Parle police station and the accused are still untraceable.
Sangeeta Dhumal (30), a housewife from Kurla, had gone to visit a relative in Andheri for Diwali. In the afternoon, she was returning with her husband and daughter in an autorickshaw via the Western Express Highway. Dhumal was wearing a gold mangalsutra worth around Rs 1 lakh. “I was seated in the middle, when two people on a bike came near our rickshaw. I did not even know what happened, but within seconds, they removed my mangalsutra and escaped,” she said.
Sandeep Shelar, the driver of the autorickshaw said, “Suddenly, there was a loud shout from behind and I saw the bike go past us and speed away on the highway.” Sangeeta and her husband went to Vile Parle police station to register a complaint. A case under Section 392 (punishment for robbery) of the IPC has been registered.
Meanwhile, police returned stolen gold valuables from various chain-snatching cases to owners at Kherwadi police station. The police had recovered gold valuables worth Rs 14 lakh and returned them to the victims who were from different parts of the city. A woman from Mulund said, “I am happy that I am getting my gold back on such an auspicious day.”
DCP Zone VIII Namdev Chauhan, ACP Vasant Dhoble and other senior police inspectors held a press conference at Kherwadi police station after the distribution, advising those present to be more careful and vigilant in the future.u00a0
