Lajos Vajdau00a0 is one of the best-known Hungarian artists of the interwar period. This autumn, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp is presenting the first general exhibition of his work in Western Europe. Vajda's oeuvre dates from an era marked by authoritarian regimes and war. Towards the end of the 1920s, he began to experiment with the geometric idiom of Constructivism. In 1930, Vajda moved to Paris, where he created photomontages reflecting current events of the time. His technique in these interesting works is reminiscent of Russian avant-garde cinema (eg Eisenstein). Lajos Vajda died in 1941. He deeply influenced the avant-garde of his era, known under the collective name of the European School.

For its 2009 autumn exhibition, Antwerp's Diamond Museum asks the question: 'What if diamonds were to divulge their 'petrified' past and, like stage actors, present their story in mises en scu00e8ne?' This may sound bizarre, but over the centuries diamonds have played a lead role in real or imagined life stories. The Diamond Museum goes in search of 'curiosities', diamond objects which are a strange shape or abnormal colour, have an unconventional iconography or a spectacular history or bear the hallmarks of a failed experiment.
