Why your favourite dish is missing from restaurant menus

You may have to do without your favourite dish if you visit your local restaurant today. Around 8,000 AHAR (Indian Hoteliers and Restaurant Association) members have decided to cut down on some items on their menus to cope with shortage caused by strikes by transporters and employees of 14 PSUs oil companies.

The transporters strike has affected the availability of fresh vegetables and fruits, and the strike by oil PSU officers has hampered the supply of cooking gas to eateries across Mumbai.

"On Wednesday, I was forced to shut my kitchen and had to sell pizzas, and I am also taking off some items from the menu. I may have to down shutters if the shortage of gas and fruits and vegetables continues," said Ravindra Shetty, proprietor, Vegitreat restaurant, Borivli.

Adding to Narayana M Alva, president of AHAR, said, "We have decided to serve a limited-items menu till supplies resume. If the shortages persist for another 48 hours, over 300 member-hoteliers in Mumbai may have to shut shop."

AHAR is contemplating approaching the courts to fight the Ministry of Petroleum's directive to stop gas supplies to commercial users in the face of the strike by their employees.
