A new era in Indian cricket is all set to begin when the selectors meet in Mumbai today to pick the teams for the five ODIs and three T20s against England starting on January 15 in Pune.

This will be the first team to be declared by the selection panel after the Supreme Court whip on BCCI. This will also be the first meeting after MS Dhoni stepped down from the ODI and T20 captaincy. Virat Kohli is the most natural choice to replace Dhoni after the former took over in Test too with great success not so long ago.

However, the number of injuries will definitely give the selectors some headache.

Rohit, Ajinkya ruled out
Two key Mumbai batsmen — Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane - have been ruled out with injuries. Shikhar Dhawan, if fit he can open the innings with KL Rahul. It will be difficult to ignore Karun Nair either after his unbeaten 303 in the last Test against England. Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav and Mandeep Singh should retain their places. With Mohammed Shami and Dhawal Kulkarni out with injuries, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav are obvious choices.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel, who was picked for the New Zealand ODIs, are nursing injuries. Ravindra Jadeja should come in for Axar and Hardik Pandya too have recovered from the injury he sustained while practising during the England series.

Fresh rewards
It will be interesting if the selectors find a place for Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina in the team. Yuvi was seen batting at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) ground not too long ago. A member of the selection panel also said that "both Yuvi and Raina are very much in contention".
