London: Former champion Venus Williams defeated unseeded 22-year-old Japanese Kurumi Nara in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-1, a second round win that delighted her fans no end.

It can be recalled that Venus skipped last year's Wimbledon and was beaten in the first round at the 2012 edition.

Nara is playing only her second Wimbledon as against Venus' 17 appearances. "At important points in the game I was able to lift my game.

That's what you do as no one is going to give you a match so I really worked on all points," Venus said.

Williams will now face 2011 champion Petra Kvitova.
