A 23-year-old girl has accused her fiance of rape after he entered into a physical relationship with her on the pretext of marriage, but then refused to wed her citing her being ‘mangalik’ as the reason. The two were engaged and their marriage date was fixed for November 17.
The 30-year-old man was arrested by Samarth police and was remanded in magistrate custody by a court yesterday. The accused, identified as Pramod Vasant Shinde, a resident of Model Colony in Gokhalenagar, works with a well-known builder from the city, while the woman is an employee of a private company, said PSI Devdutt Shirke from Samarth police station.
According to the complaint lodged by the woman recently, the alleged rape took place three months earlier at her residence and at a lodge in Khed-Shivapur. “Pramod told me that since I am a ‘mangalik’, I needed to perform some rites at a village near Bhor. He then took me to Kunal lodge in Khed-Shivapur and forcibly had sex,” she has alleged in her complaint.
“We have conducted the panchnama at the lodge and also recovered the clothes used by the accused and the complainant when the offence took place. Medical tests have also been carried out, ” said Shirke.
Advocate Deepak Shamdire, who represented the accused in court, said, “It seems to be a fabricated case since the accused’s family does not believe in horoscopes. The actual reasons behind refusal to marry the woman were different.”
