Gertrude King, was heading home from her regular market jaunt when a 200ft-long hose that had come loose from a reel and was being dragged behind the vehicle snapped against her legs, and knocked her to the pavement.
King was rushed to hospital after the freak accident in Boston, Massachusetts, but doctors were unable to save her. They said had she survived, they would have had to amputate one of her legs due to the severity of her injuries.
A police spokesman said, "The hose swung around like a slingshot and the metal nozzle at the end of the hose hit King." After eye witnesses alerted the fire crew to the loose hose they stopped and gave medical treatment to King. The Cambridge police would not say what charges, the firefighters can face if found guilty. "We are looking for any witnesses that can tell us about their observations of the fire truck,'' said Deputy Superintendent Jack Albert.
