Woman returns home, says it was a 'misunderstanding'

In a U-turn in the Bandra kidnapping case, the 27-year-old pregnant woman who was abducted by her own father returned home to her husband on Wednesday night. Salma Batliwala told the police there had been a misunderstanding: there was no abduction, rather, she was happily spending time with her father in UP where she had willingly gone with him.

The police will now cancel her husband’s FIR in the case and file a closure report. Her husband Saif thanked MiD DAY for its coverage of the story, saying his wife had returned safe because of the paper’s support.u00a0Salma told MiD DAY, “All the misunderstandings were created by my sister-in-law and my husband’s second wife Shazia.”

MiD DAY yesterday reported that cops had arrested Shazia for her role in the case. Assistant Police Inspector Nandkumar Gaikwad of Bandra police station said, “On Wednesday night, Salma returned home. She has given us a statement that she willingly went with her father Sadruddin Khan. Had she told her husband Saif Batliwala, he would not have allowed her to go with her father, she said. Now we will file a ‘C final’ report in the matter and close the case.”

The cops did not let her off easily, though. They questioned her for several hours, since it is clear from the video footage of the abduction that she was being dragged out of her husband’s Bandra house by her father.

But Salma told the police that her father only took her to their hometown in UP, and after spending some time with her family, she returned to Mumbai. Said her husband Saif, “I am thankful to MiD DAY. I am happy and relieved that my wife is back, and she will now stay with me.”

The police will now erase the names of all the accused in the kidnapping FIR filed by Saif, which names Salma’s father who is an alleged oil mafia kingpin Sadruddin Khan. Saif said, “All the misunderstanding was created by my second wife.”u00a0
