Mohanlal strangulated Maya Devi yesterday when she opposed his attempt to rape her, they said.

A meeting of panchayat members was convened in this connection which decided that Mohanlal should remain free and an FIR should not be lodged, the police said. However, Maya Devi's son Dilip Kumar opposed the panchayat's decision and lodged a complaint against Mohanlal at Sikhera police station, based on which the police arrested him and registered a case of murder.
