Akshay Kumar has conceptualised and ideated a comic book series, Tronomega to Earth Mission: Save the Planet, aimed at educating children about climate change. Abhishek Bachchan bagged the Green Globe award in 2012 at a sustainable development summit in New Delhi for his outstanding effort to fight climate change.

The actor has also mentioned then that he would be spreading awareness about a greener future and intends to be a part of a film based on climate change.

John Abraham, too, has received the EcoWarrior award for his contribution to saving wildlife. Several other film folk have recently been contributing to the save-the-world cause. Abhay Deol built an eco-friendly house in Goa in 2014 that has solar panels and a water harvesting set-up.

Apart from entertaining the masses, they also have a responsibility of making their fans aware of causes. On the occasion of World Environment Day today, film folk reveal the environment-friendly measures they have adopted in their day-to-day life.

I cherish working with wildlife conservationists. I carry glass water bottles, refuse plastic bags, have switched to e-bills with a zero print-out policy at work. I don’t take print outs of air tickets and have reduced consumption of many things that I would not have thought about earlier. We need to be aware of the hazards to the environment. Understanding that the quality of our life is not separate from the quality of our environment and that each one is a contributor in itself offers the opportunity to seek simple everyday solutions. Have bucket baths, refuse plastic, recycle glass jars, bottles, stop printing out everything, remember that everything you buy, use and throw has to go somewhere. Think of where it will go. Practice the five Rs — Refuse, Reduce, Recycle, Repair and Reuse.

I live by the lakeside in Hyderabad and the area around it is a green belt. We built our home without breaking through any rocks or uprooting any trees. More than taking any eco-friendly steps, it’s about us believing and understanding that nature and wildlife co-exist with us.

I began an eco-friendly Ganesh statues initiative in Hyderabad in 2013. I am all for environment sustainability. We must recognise our responsibility to reduce consumption of water and energy in our lives. We need to keep planting more trees, save rain water and there has to be a complete ban on the use of plastic bags worldwide.

I never shy away from informing my housing society and neighbours on the good in minimising the use of electricity in the building compound when not required. Usually, my staff and I travel in one car, as we don’t want to wast fuel. We need to understand that these small measures will protect our environment and make the place a better place to live for the next generation.

In my daily life, I am conservative about the use of electricity. I limit the use of an AC and always keep the lights switched off in any room that is not occupied. I keep myself updated on the latest research regarding the environment, and recently, I stopped buying espresso coffee pods when I found out they were non-recyclable. I shower quickly, too. Once you build certain habits, you can do a lot. Only when we decide to make a change within our own lives, can we really make a change in someone else’s life.
