The Mass Rapid Transit system forms the major component of the railway system in Singapore. The first section of MRT was opened on November 7, 1987, which makes it the second-oldest metro system in Southeast Asia, after Manila's LRT System.
The MRT network has grown rapidly in sync with Singapore’s aim of developing a comprehensive rail network, It had an average daily ridership of 3.031 million in 2015.
