Pune: A group of former first-class Maharashtra cricketers want to revive the state's players' association that was established and registered in 2004, but remained non-functional. “We had no adequate support from the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and we were not that active. But now that the Lodha Panel has expressed the need for player associations, we want to put our grievances before the MCA and want to be heard,” said former Maharashtra batting star Milind Gunjal at a press conference on Saturday.

All-rounder Yajurvindra Singh, who played four Tests for India in the 1970s, said, “Our views were never given importance and we were not acknowledged. Being former cricketers, we want due respect from the officials and want to show the world that cricketers can also become good administrators.”

Raju Bhalekar, Ajay Nagwekar, Vijay Shetty, Anwar Shaikh, Shantanu Sugwekar and Nilima Barve are part of this group. It is believed the Maharashtra players' association has more than 100 male and female players as members. “Every state affiliated to the BCCI should have its own players' association and then all can work with the All India Players' Association,” said Yajurvindra, who was picked for India in 1976-77 when he was a Maharashtra player. He later played for Saurashtra.
