Yash Joshi of Shardashram Vidyamandir English (Dadar) could not have picked a better occasion to score his maiden Harris Shield Elite Division century. The Dadar school were reeling at 30 for four in the U-16 inter-school match at Azad Maidan yesterday when Yash stepped in to bat.

The 15-year-old all rounder went on to score an impressive century (122 off 206 balls) against IES Digambar Patkar Vidyalaya (Dadar) on Day One of the second round of the tournament. His knock included 15 boundaries.

Left-arm spinner Aaradhya Shinde eventually trapped Yash leg before, but not before the No 6 batsman had put on a partnership of 130 runs with Vignesh Pashte (95) to help Shardashram end the day’s play on 325-9 in 83 overs.

IES Digambar’s medium pacer Rushikesh Kadam finished with a fine fifer, accounting for the wickets of Shardashram openers Vedant Murkar (two) and Rahul Jangle (zero) in the first over, before going on to dismiss Anindya Dalvi (zero), Abhishek Yadav (58) and Vaibhav Ramane (nine).

Yash said it was tough batting under pressure. “We were under immense pressure after we lost the first four wickets. We were not even sure if we would be able to reach a three-figure total.

I knew I couldn’t play a rash stroke. Vignesh and me decided to keep taking singles and hit only the loose deliveries,” said the Class X student, who was aiming for a double hundred.

“My aim was to score a double century, but I just couldn’t read that particular delivery correctly,” said Yash, who resides at Cotton Green and did his primary schooling at Abhyudaya HS (Kalachowki) before his parents saw his passion for cricket and decided to send him to Shardashram, where he has now spent five years.

“My previous school did not have a cricket team, so I moved here. It feels great to scored this century at a crucial time. I hope we can go on and win this match now,” he said.u00a0
