Student and boyfriend stagemanaged a theft worth Rs 3 lakh at former's Mulund residence to marry in secret; inspiration for the theft was a TV soap, cops said
A 21-year-old woman orchestrated a theft at her house with the help of her boyfriend in order to elope with him, cops said. The woman, Kirti Bijlani, a student of MMK College in Bandra, and her accomplice and boyfriend, Asif Akbar Khan (27), were arrested yesterday for stealing jewellery and cash worth Rs 3,07,000 from her residence in Mulund Colony.
On Tuesday evening, the Mulund police had registered an FIR against unknown people for the theft at the house of Mohanlal Bijlani, Kirti's father. According to the police, Mohanlal works with a private company in Thane and his wife, Lata, is an employee with an IT giant in Fort. Their elder son, Ashutosh, works with a leading chain of hotels.
On Tuesday, Lata reached home from work to find the main door of the house open. She called Ashutosh to check if he had come home, but he said he didn't. When Kirti reached home, she claimed that her valuables were missing. Lata then called her husband and they registered an FIR with the Mulund police.
"To begin with, we interrogated several people in the area including some active criminals," said Mahadeo Gundewadi, assistant commissioner of police, Mulund division. But after investigations, the police learnt that there were some visitors at the Bijlani residence on the afternoon the crime occurred. "We found that the two visitors were Kirti's friends, and she had not revealed the information to us," said Pandarinath Patil, assistant police inspector of Mulund police station.
The visitors, Asif and another one of Kirti's friends, Sachin Shinde (27), were summoned to the police station, where, after interrogations, they confessed to being part of the crime. They further revealed that Kirti had masterminded the robbery because she wanted to run away with Asif and marry him secretly. Police have arrested Asif and Kirti in the case, while Sachin has been let off. The duo will be produced in court today.
However, Ashutosh, Kirti's brother said, "My sister was brainwashed by Asif and his friends. She can never do such a thing," he said
Inspired by soap
Cosp said that the inspiration for the crime was a soap opera. "They required the money to flee and settle. So, Kirti, taking inspiration from a television serial, planned the theft. She left the house keys near her window so Asif could collect it to enter the house and make off with the ornaments," Patil said.
