Ayan Mukerji was in the news for apparently dilly-dallying a lot while okaying scenes for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani while it was being shot but looks like the director has hit jackpot at the ticket windows after its release. Opening across 3,100 screens across the country, the trade says the film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone has had an exceedingly good opening.

According to distributor Suneil Wadhwa, the opening weekend figures for the film stood at a whopping Rs 62 crore. He says, “The out-of-the-box marketing drive and the music aided the film’s opening. The film has done well overseas as well with figures at approximately USD four million. After this film, Ranbir is the new superstar.”

Distributor Sunny Khanna says, “The film has received massive numbers with Friday figures being Rs 18.85 crore, Saturday at Rs 19.48 crore and Sunday at Rs 22.94 crore, the sum of which is the biggest till date for a non-holiday weekend. Dabangg 2 raked in Rs 58 crore when it released.

On Saturday, some smaller centres did see a drop but the numbers rose across other circuits. With the film doing quite well in the first week itself, the producers have stood to gain when it comes to sharing profits with the exhibitors. While tickets for this film had been hiked, it just proves that the audience does not mind shelling out the extra money.”

Manoj Desai, the owner of a single screen theatre informs that all the 12 shows over the weekend were houseful. Even the Monday matinee show had 70 per cent occupancy. However he adds, “In single screens, the film isn’t doing as well as expected.”

Exhibitor Girish Wankhede states that at his multiplex, the film had 80 per cent occupancy over the weekend. He says, “Over the last two weeks, there was a lull. Looks like Ayan’s film has benefited from this situation. Also, a lot of block bookings were done for this film, indicating the public’s enthusiasm in watching the film. The Hollywood release Hangover 3 had an occupancy of 55 to 60 per cent.”u00a0
