State issues government resolution relieving controversy-ridden Dr Gaikwad, from his post as medical superintendent of St George's Hospital

Justice has finally been served, as it appears in the case of Dr Chandrakant Gaikwad, the medical superintendent of St George's Hospital.

According to a government resolution (GR) issued yesterday by the state medical education department, the senior, who had been embroiled in more than one scandal in the past, has been removed from the post of superintendent.

The GR states that Gaikwad who was appointed under the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), has been relieved from the medical education department where he was serving on deputation. The GR further states that Dr Gaikwad did not work keeping the best interest of the department and the hospital.

On the cards

The removal of once-too many-bitten Gaikwad has been on the cards for some time now, as he has repeatedabused his position (see box).

Before the GR was passed, the state's medical education ministry had already hinted his removal when the medical education secretary Milind Mahiskar had written a letter to the public health department pleading with them to take Gaikwad back to the public health department.

The GR may bring a smile to several faces as Gaikwad had been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Gaikwad in the past had issued threats to doctors of St George Hospital showboating his political clout ('Bhaigiri', January 31).

Gaikwad was also facing an internal inquiry for using the gym meant for female nursing students (Please don't use our gym, sir!,' November 2 2010). Apart from this, the superintendent was even accused of using the hospital ambulance for ferrying his daughter to college.

Dr T P Lahane, Dean of JJ group of Hospital, said, "Dr Gaikwad was already facing various internal inquiries and the staffers of the hospital had submitted various complaints against him and thus the state has taken the action to relieve him from the post of superintendentu00a0 and send him back to Directorate of Health Services."
