Baramati police officials have arrested a 30-year-old man forsexually abusing an eight-year-old girl at his residence on Sunday afternoon. The girl had stepped out her house while her mother was saying her afternoon prayers when the accused accosted the minor to his vacant room and allegedly made sexual advances. The matter came to light after the victim’s mother spotted her daughter’s slippers outside the doorstep of the accused, and knocked on the door.u00a0

The accused has been identified as Vivek Ramesh Jadhav, a resident of Baramati district. Police have booked him under Sections 354 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 7, 2, 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual offences Act, 2012. He was later taken to the court where he was remanded in police custody for five days.

Baramati police sub-inspector Suresh Chavan said, “The medical examination of the victim has been done, and it indicates that there are no injuries to the victim’s mouth or private parts. But, she has sustained minor injuries to her leg.”

Allegations were levelled against the police that , initially, they were not interested in registering an FIR, but the case was finally registered after a local social worker intervened.

The police also did not send the girl for medical tests at the local Silver Jubilee Hospital, stating that the doctor was not present. The medical test was later conducted at Rui Rural Hospital, near Baramati.

Police said that the victim’s family is economically weak, and were residing at a house that was leased from Vivek’s father. After the incident, the victim’s family alleged that Vivek’s family members approached and threatened them, asking them to hush up the matter.

Neighbours and residents from the area who are visiting them to enquire of the incident have also besieged the victim’s family. Unsettled with the mental harassment and fearing a reprisal from the accused’s family, the family has decided to relocate to another place with help from the immediate boss of the victim’s father.

Speaking to MiD DAY, the victim’s father said, “Vivek’s mother came to our house and requested us to forgive him and take the case back. His aunty has also made a humble request regarding the same. But Vivek’s father is not forgiving him for his act.”

The victim’s uncle, however, believes that the Vivek’s father’s silence in the matter is all a part of a hidden agenda. “The victim’s father had quarrel with another person in the past, and that person is closely associated with Vivek. So, we fear that he will play a major role, and intimidate our family to compromise in the case.”

According to a few locals, Vivek has some criminal cases registered against him in the past. One of his neighbours’ said, “He [Vivek] often consumes alcohol and also takes drugs. In the recent past, he had kicked his pregnant wife, after which she had to abort the child. His wife had also tried committing suicide three years ago by setting herself on fire.”

“There have been no threat calls made to the victim’s family,” clarified Chavan. u00a0
