India: After Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic flopped, things aren't the same between director Kunal Kohli and Yash Raj Films.
It is believed that post-TPTM, the friendship between Aditya Chopra and Kunal is feeling the strain.
Together no more
Says a source, "It started with Kunal not being paid what he was owed 20 to 25 per cent of the profits. Then, he was asked to vacate the YRF premises, which he was using as his space. And finally, YRF backed out on a commitment to back three films to be directed by Kunal's assistants."
The Fanaa director will now produce these films himself.
Introspection
Kunal insists that he has been paid every single rupee by YRF as his fees, "That's the last thing anyone can accuse YRF of. After Mujhse Dosti Karogi which didn't do well, Adi raised my director's fees for Hum Tum. After TPTM, both Adi and I sat down and tried to figure out where we went wrong but there were no bitter accusations."
Of ups and downs
One can understand Kunal's reluctance to point fingers at the production house that he has had a long association with. He says, "It's too premature to talk about this. Once I finalise my scripts and casting, I will approach a production house for joint production."
When asked what happened to the deal with Yashraj, he says "That was not my deal with them. The contract is from film to film. My relationship with YRF is not spoilt at all. We have been through many ups and downs and out of four films, I have given two blockbusters in Hum Tum and Fanah. Just because TPTM didn't do well we can't go around blaming each other.
Kunal says he is writing scripts with his assistant directors and has signed them for his production company, Kunal Kohli Productions. "I will be launching my assistants, Vickey Bari, Danish Aslam and Benoy Gandhi in the recent future as soon as the scripts get finalised. I will do all kinds of films from small budget experimental films to commercial ones. I don't have a style of filmmaking and I want my directors to make their kind of films. I will be there to guide them but not force them to my style of filmmaking."
