Mumbai:

fear behind the smiles? Adnan Sami with wife Sabah

Adnan has been receiving death threats post 26/11, gets a security posse in place

In the wake of the terror attacks in the city, Adnan Sami is an very worried man. The singer-composer has been receiving constant death threats from a political outfit.

Says a very concerned friend of Adnan, "The calls started coming immediately after that horrific Wednesday.

The command was simple, 'Leave Mumbai immediately or be killed.' At first, Adnan didn't take the threatening calls seriously.

After all, he has been targetted ever since he made Mumbai his home 10 years ago.

A group of musicians have been constantly campaigning to get him thrown out of the industry and the country."

Soon the threats got very frequent and increasingly persistent in tone.

"Adnan then decided that this time, the threat was more serious than before.

For the first time, he became seriously worried for himself and his wife Sabah," says the friend.

Apparently, Adnan spoke to the powers that be, going as high as Sonia Gandhi, telling her about the risk to his family's lives.

But when security was not forthcoming, Adnan decided to arrange for his own security.

Notes the friend, "He now moves around with four bodyguards and four armed men provided by an agency named 911.

This security posse accompanies him everywhere.

They stay in his house and go to concerts and other social occasions with him.

Adnan is seriously scared for his life.

He has told very close friends the name of the organisation that should be held responsible if something untoward were to happen to him."

Adnan is reluctant to speak on the subject.

"Where did you hear about it? I guess the security is so visible one can't really hide the reason behind it. I won't say much on this. But I will ask one thing. What have I done?"

Black band is meaningless

Adnan Sami says, "I won't wear a black band as a mark of protest against the terror attacks.

These gestures are meaningless and cannot undo the ghastly tragedy that has befallen our beloved city.

Lighting of candles, etc, is all humbug.

Where was the state security when Mumbaikars were being mowed down? We were calling the Black Cats from Delhi! Why don't we have our own Black Cats in Mumbai? After all, it is the financial capital of India.

What difference is a black band going to make? Will it resurrect the dead? My heart bleeds for all those who died because of these barbaric, brutal, misguided fools who crept in from the sea to drown us in shame and sorrow.
