Mumbai: Jaane Tu... satellite rights changes hands; from Zee to Colors
Recession is hitting B-Town hard but it seems the R-word is not affecting love. The rights of Imran Khan's debut Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na were with Zee TV but it has now been bought up by Colors. Interest-ingly, Khan's girlfriend Avantika Malik works in Studio 18 and her mother is on the board of directors of the same company.
A source says, "Zee Tele-vision bought the world sate- llite rights of Jaane Tua... (at Rs 3 crore) along with Taare Zameen Par as a package deal (before the former's release) at Rs 12 crore. At the time, they didn't foresee the movie becoming such a huge success.
Now just when Zee was planning a grand television premiere for the film, they got a call from a Colors representative, asking if they were interested in selling the rights of the film to them.
The source further adds, "Colors paid the channel three times the original price for the rights of Jaane Tu. The people at Zee took the decision within minutes to let go of the rights." It is believed that Studio 18 wants to keep all of Imran's movies in their library. In the past, Studio 18 paid a high amount to get the world and satellite rights of Imran's Kidnap.
Number-crunching On condition of anonymity, a source from Zee Television says, "We got the rights of TZP from Aamir at 9 crore, but Colors took Jaane Tu from us at a whopping 17 crore 11 lakh. How is an Aamir Khan film is sold for half the price of a new actor's movie?"
Zee's official spokesperson says, "We are not aware of any such deal." Colors remained unavailable for comment.
