New Delhi: Vikram Phadnis took his foyer folks to gypsy land on the fourth day of the WIFW. Kitsch as cool as it could get, colours at their riotous best and ethnicity at its funkiest was what he had to offer to the capital on a Saturday evening at a particularly crowded Pragati Maidan. Majestic mirror work met grand goldens and smart li'l hemlines to make the affair an energy-oozing fantasy at first, but mellower Fabindia ishtyle sarees followed suit. Spunky hand-stitched shoes underneath black socks (we're talking spring-summer, by the way) lit up slender feet while big, bold gypsy anklets brought in the desi punch. Toss in beads, gemstones, forehead-spanning tikkas, balloon silhouettes, wooden bangles, jhintak jholas, zari-gota work, loose threads and mast fusion music, and whoa⦠that's Phadnis phunk for you!
The line, though, appeared to be Manish Arora meets Sabyasachi Mukherjee, with the characteristic traditional tadka of the former and the Indo-grunge of the latter. Anarkali cuts mixed with black slacks made for vibrant fusion, while the designer, himself, thought it all to be one of his "simpler collections"! When we quizzed him about his much awaited directorial debut, Phadnis seeked patience. "I know how Bollywood works⦠everything takes time! It has been in the pipeline for long and yes, the story's shaping up slowly," he said. The chap believes in affordability, so his range starts from Rs 5000 and there're no big stars in his Bolly project as of now!
Phadnis deserted!
