Checkmate, says Valaya
By: Soumya Mukerji

New Delhi: Singh is king, cheered the crowd as the hall opened to reveal a set with naked mannequins seated amid the many cubicles of a multi-level showcase; and JJ Valaya quite lived up to the phrase. Opulence overflew from the very first piece that was sashayed across in its splendid blacks, whites and reds, followed by tight shorts for men, bold red pants, glitzy bags, handkerchief tops and slack-styled churidars. The overtly obvious hair extensions were quite a spoiler, though.

"Royal Ruckus is all about what goes into a designer's head while developing a concept, and it isn't easy," explained the designer. The spread, starting at Rs 8000, boasted of checks and chips of all kinds — huge chessboard ones, those that looked like little windows on the bags, miniature snakeskin ones on sheer georgette gowns, and in-betweens in greens and yellows that reminded you of children's toy blocks. A faux pas by the DJ, who brought the music to an abrupt standstill midway, was forgivable, thanks to JJ's overpowering grandeur. Posh and predictable, reads the verdict.
