B'day girl Asin's got 'em shaking
By: Subhash K Jha

India:

Asin Thottumkal, who makes her B-Town debut with Aamir Khan's Ghajini come Decem-ber, planned to head to Chennai on the day of her birthday (October 26) when she turned 23. But finally couldn't go ahead with her plan. Instead, she brought in her birthday with a cake-cutting with her father Joseph  (who looks after her work) and her mother.

Asin, who is a sensation in the South, moved to Mumbai a year ago. She is now considered a top contender for B-Town's No 1 crown even before her big Hindi film debut.

No friends for me!

Sadly, the actress has no friends in Mumbai. According to a source, this is because Asin is seen as a threat by the ruling  female superstars.

Laughs one of her male co-stars, "The other girls in Mumbai don't feel threatened by one another. But the minute a striking pretty and talented actress from the South comes, they get all jittery. They see Asin as the next No 1 after Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi and Aishwarya Rai."

Says Asin, "It is true that all my friends are in Chennai and Kochi. I have yet to make friends in Bollywood. I don't know why. Here it is just work and going back home to my parents."

This much talked-about 23-year-old has two big releases coming up one after another. But she is not allowed to talk about Ghajini, which releases on Christmas and Vipul Shah's London Dreams which opens in summer 2009.

House proud

Asin has moved bag and baggage with her parents to pursue a full-time career in Hindi cinema. The family has been staying in a rented place in the suburbs for a year now. But now, the actress is ready to buy her own place in Bandra. "We'll zero in on the place we want soon."
