Zara sa hatke

By: Amul Sharma

Amul Sharma' s take on the daringly different set

They refused to tread the straight and narrow, instead finding that their creativity got fullest expression when playing the unconventional. From playing the urbane, suave, young man who shuns conventional avenues to pursue impossible dreams to characters that evoke a mixed bag of reactions, these actors believe normal is boring.

Kangna Ranaut
Debut: Gangster (2006): Directed by Anurag Basu

This fragile beauty from Himachal Pradesh with her unruly hair, skinny frame and quirky fashion sense was launched in Gangster. She moved up quickly and in her next she is starring with Hrithik Roshan.  A talented actress, she has been typecast constantly playing disturbed characters (Who Lamha, Fashion) and she lends herself rather well to such roles. Her choices in men have been interesting. From Aditya Pancholi who has children close to her age, to Adhyayan Suman, who was her own age? Kangna's characters reflect her spirit - untamed, moody and often veering over the edge. She will go places if she can get her act right, and gets voice modulation lessons.

Abhay Deol
Debut: Socha Na Tha (2005): Directed by Imtiaz Ali

He came from the Deol clan. So we thought he'd romance like Bobby or do maar-dhaad like Sunny but Abhay Deol proved with his very first film that he is not going to take the safe road. After Socha Na Tha, he went on to do other Hat-ke roles. From Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local to Manorama, to Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye, this Deol continues his quest for the daring and the different. And he has managed to carve a space that is essentially his own in B-Town. At the peak of his career after Dev D, he took off to New York for woodcarving and such. Now back, he is shooting for Aisha. With Sonam Kapoor.

Farhan Akhtar
Debut: Rock On!! (2008): Directed by Abhishek Kapoor

A successful writer-director who turns into an actor. How's that for unconventional?  No mainstream director (leave alone married, and a father of two) has made it as an actor but Farhan pulled off Rock On!  He even turned singer, which was surprising, given his hoarse voice would find mass appeal. He is balancing both acting and direction. He will next be seen in Karthik Calling Karthik and he is simultaneously working on the script on Don 2.

Rajeev Khandelwal

Debut: Aamir (2008)

Rajeev comes from the world of television to cinema. A transition that has killed many talented actors.  What's more he chose an unconventional Aamir for a launch. And just when he was signed on for Sanjay Leela Bhansali production with Vidya Balan Rajeev has gone back to television to host a reality shows. Here's an actor who works by instinct and doesn't care about the outcome. Didn't he give up Ekta Kapoor's  serial Kahiin To Hoga  at  the peak of its popularity?

Prateik Babbar
Debut:  Jaane Tu....Ya Jaane Na (2007)
To begin with Prateik was so unconventional in looks and behavior that no  one, not even his  mother Smita Patil's staunchest fan, thought he'd be anything but an oddity. But oddities are the order of the Friday.  Prateik is today being wooed with loads of roles. He actually said no to AB Corp Ltd's  film on Emperor Ashoka and feigns amnesia when asked about it. In his next  film he plays a  dhobi. And in a Sanjay Bhansli's production he's again as quirky as it can get. Who says it doesn't pay to be  a non-conformist?
