Lost in the magic of words

By: Urmimala Banerjee

Actor Boman Irani hates the FYIs and BTWs. "I wish today's kids wrote English the way it is taught in schools. But if my sons write anything funny, I text back an OTS (One tight slap)," winks Boman. As we caught him at the reading session of a new book, Not Like Most Young Girls, the actor spoke about his love for books:

Who: Boman Irani
What: Talks about his love for reading
Where: At a bookstore

I'm serious!
I think everyone should develop a habit to read. Nowadays, I see a lot of people religiously following society news, movie reviews, Bollywood/Hollywood scandals and gossip. It's fine to be updated on all that, but at the same time, people need to be aware of serious civic and society issues as well. The real stories around us need to be heard and told. Talking about the depiction of real issues on celluloid, a film needs dramatisation, so a director can't be 100 per cent true to the original content. Also, movies need a dash of entertainment, as no one will pay to watch a serious somber story in the theatres. But, I strongly feel that youngsters should read more about serious issues.

On a tale
Reading has always been a part of my life. But I feel that like a writer, even an actor has a story to tell with his character or role. In fact, people tell stories through paintings, dance or drama. I have worked as a photographer and theatre actor, so I understand the nuances of expression. But will I ever write a book?
I don't think so. Writing a book requires a lot of research and patience. As of now, I just want to act. I would have loved to essay the role of Hannibal Lecter, but Anthony Hopkins has already done that. And it's such an iconic performance! Given a chance, I would like to play characters from Shakespearean plays. In fact, many books get converted into films, as a good story will always be appreciated, no matter in which format it is told.

Bowled by biographies
As a child, my taste in books was a little girly. I loved reading the Enid Blyton series, including Malory Towers. Thrillers also fascinated me; I have read all of John Grisham. I also love short stories of Jeffrey Archer. Nowadays, I am hooked onto biographies and autobiographies. At times, the lives of real people have more drama than that of fictional ones. I find biographies very inspiring. When I read about great people, I feel very humble and also get motivated to do better in life.
In fact, I can spend an entire day in a bookstore checking out books, toys, DVDs, stationery, gift items, etc.
