'Besharam' rakes in Rs 44.5 crore in its 5-day extended weekend
Ranbir Kapoor's latest film, 'Besharam' has hardly any takers at ticket windows
Given Ranbir Kapoor’s rate of success at the box office, a lot of hopes were pinned on his latest release, Besharam. Not only did the film receive maximum number of screens for a Bollywood film, it was also released mid-week to cash in on a national holiday. But the RK starrer could only bite the dust going by the tepid response the film has received from the audiences.
Besharam opened on Wednesday and collected approximately Rs 21 crore and since then went on a downward spiral. Even the weekend provided not much of a respite with Rs 5.75 crore earned on Saturday and Rs 7.5crore on Sunday. According to the trade, the film has managed to earn only Rs 44.5 crore despite a 5-day extended weekend.
Exhibitor Akshaye Rathi says, “The box office numbers for Besharam are disappointing. Besides the content of the film, it’s failure can be attributed to the promotions, which were lacklustre and stereotypical. This also proves that no filmmaker, trade analyst or trade person is more discerning than the audience, which can sniff out a good film from a bad one.”
Trade analyst Amod Mehra says, “The report is bad. The only saving grace was Wednesday when the film opened, thanks to Ranbir’s popularity. A crowd puller, his presence in the film helped collect approximately Rs 20 crore at the ticket window. But since then there has been a fall with Sunday being a tad better. It is an expensive project and no big films lined up for release next weekend might still not be able to help it.”
According to distributor Sunny Khanna, Besharam fell short of the expectations. He explains, “After having an A-list Bollywood actor, the film failed to draw audiences to the cinemas. It shows that the movie was not marketed well and the promos were not appreciated. The movie started dipping as the word-of-mouth as well as the reviews were not good. The Lunchbox has been appreciated by the audience. It has collected Rs 1.25 crore in its third week, the total being Rs 19.50 crore.”
