The small, generic, vintage prints have lost their charm, says Puneet Nanda from Satya Paul, as fashionistas strive to make a 'big impression.' Eye-popping colours coupled with larger than life patterns are creating waves in offices and streets around the globe. Actor Amrita Rao too is besotted by large prints. "They look smart and add a lot of drama to your outfit," she says.
But don't get carried away while trying to put things in 'print'. Make sure that at least one item of your ensemble is a solid colour. Here are some tips that you can follow to ensure that you don't become a bold print victim:
* Big scarf prints look best on free-flowing garments like chiffon dresses and voluminous skirts, suggests Puneet. The fall of the garment should be flattering.
But... go slow on the accessories. You can't have too many items grabbing attention.
* Fashion designer Babita Malkani says that bright colours are all the rage these days. Her new collection is inspired by some of the latest designs like butterfly prints and flowers.
But... if you're not too girly, you could try sporting geometric or abstract designs.
* Overweight people should stay away from scarf prints as they will only draw attention to their size.
But... ultra large prints which pretty much cover the entire garment can work for you, says Puneet.
* If you are thin or scrawny, you'll look great in bold prints. So make sure you stock some in your wardrobe.
But... ensure that the prints aren't so overpowering that you get lost somewhere. Stick to medium-sized prints.
* We understand that you like sporting the latest trends to work, but keep your industry in mind before you choose your clothes every morning. People from the media can freak out on bold prints, donning whatever pleases the eye, says Puneet.
But... if you're in a serious profession like banking or medicine, please don't go overboard.
* Hawaiian prints look good only when you're holidaying in Goa and not in office. Be a little more tasteful in your selection of patterns. Ethnic, batik prints, geometric patterns are hot for office wear this season.
But... you could also experiment with abstract, incongruous designs if you want to create an impact.
* Printed denims are so not hot. Jeans are meant to be plain so don't try to find a pair with funky designs on it.
But... batik trousers do look cool when worn with plain, well fitting tops.
* Don't put yourself through the trouble of buying matching printed footwear / bag / belt for your new tunic. Subtlety is still a virtue.
But... you could sport a printed footwear / bag / belt independently with a plain top and jeans.
* Having said that, do remember that plain belts look great with straight cut dresses, says Babita.
But... don't wear one if you've got a paunch to hide.
* Scarves in bold prints look fantastic on a plain, vanilla outfit. "They add flair to your attire," says Amrita.
But... don't kill the impact of the scarf by tying it around your head. It's only nice around the neck !
Big is Beautiful
Style statement: I am comfortable in dresses and formals. I think dresses are very elegant and they compliment my body structure. Moreover, I like to dress for myself and feel comfortable in whatever I am wearing
Bold prints... have their own charm. Prints are in fact back in fashion now and I think you just need to know how to balance your printed outfit with the right colours and accessories to look stunning
Fashion Faux Pas: I have seen women wearing outfits, colours and accessories that don't suit them. Also wearing irrationally high heels is what makes you look like a clown if you're not comfortable in it. So, I would say you should wear something that suits your body type and not what looks good on others
