India:

Sometimes, it's tough to draw the proverbial line that should not be crossed. It's believed that "greedy" Indian professionals are losing the trust of their employers, as they continue to violate contracts (don't turn up on the day they are expected to, possibly because they are negotiating an offer with another company, after accepting their new offer letter).

Is being emotionally disconnected from your job, necessarily a negative trait? We get desi professionals to
confess what makes them hop, skip and jump.

How does an organisation deal with Gen Y?

Lancelot Cutinha, Senior Vice President (Human Resources)

This generation is programmed differently from previous one. Once we understand them, we can exploit their hidden talent. The Gen Virtual is enthusiastic and creative. They are privileged, not obliged to work for a firm.

They job-hop only when their needs are not met. If a firm wants to grow faster, they need to involve the young employees in the company's expansion.

It's an employer's job to get employees attached to the organisation. There is a leadership crisis, and the employer must retain good workers. Reverse mentoring is a good way of doing it.

You are being unethical IF

You rush for job interviews during office hours

Giving interviews during your office hours, is wrong. Doing so by fabricating excuses is considered more unethical than by doing it while keeping your boss in the loop (provided you share a good rapport with him/her).

You discuss confidential company information with outsiders

You are liable to keep certain matters a secret. Discussing confidential issues, whether financial or critical with outsiders is just not done.

You take credit for work done by colleagues

Taking credit for your contribution is fine, but claiming someone else's idea as yours, is wrong.

You use your office hours for personal work

Solving a pal's problems, sharing fashion tips on Google Talk, with friends abroad, or having a long chat on the office line, is avoidable.

You fudge expense reports

Charging the firm for personal travel and forging it in the allowances or simply taking extra allowances from the organisation, isn't what a loyal employee should be doing.

You use office resources for personal reasons

Using the office printer to get a zillion prints of Internet information your kid can use for his/her project, taking office stationary home, indicate misuse of office resources.

If you were offered a higher designation, 40% raise, but asked to quit without serving your notice period, would you?

Sejal Deshpande, Emcee

No, I won't. I will never breach a contract if I have signed it. Besides, I might be an employer some day, and I wouldn't my employee to do the same.

Anamika Butalia, Assistant Manager with a media firm

I would comply, only after speaking to my HR about the kind of perks the other job is offering (you want to stay on good terms with your current employer too). If my new employer is willing to buy out my notice period, I'd go for it.

Mithun Roy, Interior Designer

A contract usually states that if you quit without serving the notice period, you have to give up two months' salary. If I do this for a better paying  job, I'm not being unethical.

Vishal Khanna, Head Management Development, CEAT LTD

The corporate world rewards integrity, loyalty and commitment. But employees today, are only committed to themselves. They see the organisation as a tool to fulfill their ambitions.

How to tackle the problem?

Shobha Sant, Entrepreneur

Organisations want to jump rungs in the corporate ladder, and catapult to the top. They are equally responsible. They need to think before offering impractical salaries and perks. Employers should focus on the media to understand the current generation. Watching shows like MTV Roadies, Get Gorgeous or Splitsville, will helpi doing that.
