Environmentalists have been encouraging us to go green. But if global warming isn't a concern that leaves you at the edge of your seat, personal health just might. While a diet rich in veggies is known to help you burn calories and shed kilos, going green with your exercise workout can keep you away from respiratory diseases. The benefits of walking in a park, over jogging on your gym treadmill, or running down the Marine Drive promenade, are surprising.

How vehicular traffic can affect your heart
In a study, men who previously had heart attacks (but had a stable heart) exercised while being exposed for short periods to traffic-equivalent levels of diesel exhaust. The result was reduced blood flow to their hearts. So, while they were exercising to stay fit, their efforts were wasted due to the toxic fumes that they inhaled while walking, as vehicles zoomed past.

3 reasons why you should switch to a green walk
*A 45-minute brisk walk in a park, three to four times a week, can do wonders for your mood and health.
*It increases (HDL) good cholesterol in your body, which protects you against cardiovascular diseases.
*It helps reduce the amount of medication you take, if you are suffering from borderline diabetes, blood pressure and heart disease.

If you are going to walk or jog on a busy street
It's best to do so when there's less traffic on the road, ideally between 6.30 am and 7 am.
 
Unhygienic gyms can make you sick. Gyms can be a breading ground for germs and viruses, if basic standards of hygiene are not met.

While the AC in your gym cools the interiors, it can also be responsible for circulating viruses.

Carry a napkin, and wipe gym equipment before using it.

Try and use your own gym mat. Wash it once a month with a mild detergent.

Invest in two pairs of flip flops and ensure you always have a clean, dry pair to take to the gym. It's always better to wear a pair of flip flops while inside the shower room, if you take a quick rinse before leaving the gym.
